Rapids Nordic Ski Team welcomes all students grades 7-12 interested in cross-country skiing and racing. Our coaching staff provides opportunities for everyone, regardless of experience level.
Team Goals:
Develop a lifelong love for skiing
Build strength and conditioning for ski racing
Learn technical proficiency in classic and skate skiing
Set and achieve personal goals
Learn ski preparation and waxing for various conditions
Consult coaches before purchasing personal equipment.
04Practice Schedule
Practice: Monday–Friday, 3:30–5:30 PM
Dryland practice begins November 9th — meet at the High School lobby
On-snow practices held at Mt. Itasca
Equipment should be labeled with your name
05Communication
The team uses the Remind app for daily communication and schedule updates
Check Remind regularly for practice location changes and cancellations

06Transportation
Transportation to and from practice is NOT provided
Families are responsible for arranging transportation — plan accordingly
Carpooling is encouraged
07Section Team Selection
Section teams are selected based on a combination of race speed and demonstrated commitment to the team.
Factors considered include race results, practice attendance, attitude, and dedication to teammates.
08Clothing for Nordic Skiing
Proper apparel is essential for both enjoyment and performance. Nordic skiing generates significant body heat, so the challenge is managing moisture while staying warm and blocking wind.
WICKING, WARMTH, WIND
Base Layer (Wicking)
Worn next to skin — avoid cotton at all costs
Long underwear top and bottoms in wool or polyester blend
Wind briefs for cold days
Ski-specific socks (wool blend)
Buff or neck gaiter
Mid Layer (Warmth)
Used on very cold days for added insulation
Form-fitting fleece top or vest
Full-zip preferred for temperature regulation
Outer Layer (Wind Protection)
Wind-resistant front with breathable back
Nordic-specific jacket (team provides race suits; some jackets available)
Nordic ski pants with ankle zippers for easy on/off over boots
Lightweight hat or headband — not too heavy
Nordic gloves or lobster-style mittens
Accessories
Sunglasses or eye protection (essential on bright/windy days)
